Misrepresenting headlines

Just to get things straight: it is not the EU that "tries to isolate Irish after treaty rejection." It is Ireland that has chosen to isolate itself by rejecting the EU.

Quite. Reminds me of the old joke of Nixon having an asshole transplant, which failed. The asshole rejected him.

I love that joke, and the funny thing is that you could update the name and it would still work just as well.

I hope you're not drawing too tight an equivalence, though: in that case, depending on how one sees it, the EU could either be placed either in the position of Richard Nixon or that of a transplantable asshole.

And I (and we) think our much-maligned trans-national political entity--whatever its faults--is far more appealing than either one of those options...

Lovely to hear from you as always!

Nice one, Geoff! Made me laugh out loud in the dire desert of my humourless office.

Oh, I certainly didn't mean it to be an exact simile. I too have much affection for our EU, despite its failings... Mind you, perhaps one could think of Eurovision in the context of the joke; I never know whether to laugh or cry when I watch it...
