1. Watch Perversion for Profit, an anti-pornography film from 1965, in which George Putnam (‘outstanding news reporter’) rails against the ‘floodtide of filth’ which threatened to undermine American morality in the mid-60s. (Just imagine how he felt a few years later, after the sexual revolution really got going…)
According to Putnam: ‘We know that once a person is perverted, it is practically impossible for that person to adjust to normal attitudes in regard to sex.’
You have been warned.
2. Download free live versions of songs by Nouvelle Vague. This French band basically has only one concept: taking pop and indie hits from various bands (Joy Division, The Smiths, the Cure, The Dead Kennedys) mainly from the 80s and reworking them as bossa nova. Hit or miss…but I love their version of one of my favourite songs of all time: XTC’s ‘Making Plans for Nigel’.
3. Scroll through this collection of ‘strange statues around the world’. Perhaps you’ll find something close to home? Or, you’ll be inspired to your own acts of creative strangeness.
