It's Thursday .... it's five o'clock .... and it's Christival!

2008 sees the fifth coming of Christival, a congress where open and tolerant young believers gather to share opinions about the Bible, receive scriptural advice regarding the relationship between the sexes, sway together to Sacropop and have their homosexuality healed. No, I won't extend my commentary about this event, which I am not sad to miss, especially since Begrenzte Wissenschaft has already busily been scathing.

However, I thought I provide a brief soundtrack für die Daheimgebliebenen. Sadly, this is a mere snippet of a great song by German singer-songwriter Funny van Dannen. The lyrics are important, which is why you find them underneath. Ladies and Gentlemen: "Junge Christen Unterwegs" (Young Christians on the Road):

Junge Christen Unterwegs

Dann denk doch mal an Jesus,
Der war besser als Du
Er mußte so jung sterben,
Sag mal was dazu !

Gott ist unser Sponsor. Uhhhh

Ach! Give me the devil's tunes, any day.

Apt enough for a pagan May Day?

I think it was Billy Connolly who observed that people who become Christians immediately start clothes shopping in K-Mart. And I'm not the first to note that in addition they instantly lose any sense of musical appreciation they may once have had.

That video is enough to make the most mild-mannered of people want to go and nail someone to a tree.

Billy Connolly was absolutely right.

Which is why I think Herr van Dannen's send-up of happy-clappy god-botherism works so well.

Irony and sarcasm are his specialties. Apparent in songs such as Lesbische schwarze Behinderte and Po-Sex und Poesie.

I don't think most real Christians would allow these ditties anywhere near their IPods.

I actually find I don't need much provocation to want to nail people to trees. And I think I'm quite mild mannered. Honest.

Maybe I should pay more attention in future. I never read the lyrics first time around, and failed to spot that the video was a send-up, so deadly accurate is its portrayal of happy-clappy godbotherism.

Now I see what you mean.

Right, that's my five minute break up. Back to work.

One of the hardest things to get in a foreign language, I have discovered, is subtle irony.

That and -- with any regularity -- correctly matching up three noun genders and four grammatical cases to create correct sentences.

No wonder I keep the nail-gun handy.
