The aims of life are the best defense against death

As a small commemoration of Yom HaShoah (thanks to Norm for the reminder), I offer a couple of images I took recently while we were in Berlin for a conference.

I took a morning off and visited the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

Which is far more of a thorough experience than the pictures suggest.

And a reminder of a reminder a bit closer to home.

To me it's a typical memorial here in Germany- it condemns no-one and says nothing. I'm glad such valuable real estate in such a symbolic location was used, but it's disconcerting to see Italian tourists running around screaming and playing tag between the stelae.
Meanwhile here in Munich the plaque in front of the Feldherrnhalle commemorating the four dead policemen killed whilst stopping the Hitler putsch has quietly been removed for some reason.
